There is only one question keeping me from believing in God...?

In the bible, it talks about how God killed all the people of the land because they had all sinned and didn't believe in him and betrayed him. I don't understand why someone who is supposed to be forgiving could just kill people. I really need help answering this, its seriously eating me up inside...
